In light of George Michael doing a little (kid-gloved) swatting at Madonna on Twitter today reminded me of the time when she gave him a Video Vanguard Award on MTV (video after the jump) right after what was arguably her best-ever televised performance. I tweeted George to ask him if he felt she had soft-outed him by snapping her fingers and calling him a diva—we'll see if he replies.

Speaking of her greatest-ever televised performance, be sure to check out Billboard's list. For my money, it has to be "Sooner or Later," nerves notwithstanding. Vocally and visually, it was beyond confident and it came at the absolute peak of her powers. But I'm also partial to the good, old-fashioned singing on Oprah's "Ray of Light" and of course the pop cultural explosion that was "Vogue" on MTV. And there is no denying that "Express Yourself" is right up there.
